2023 was the 40th anniversary of my career as a dentist. From the age of 4, I still have memories of accompanying my mother who worked in a hospital as a dental technician and meeting all the other technicians and dentists. I was nicknamed “the little dentist.” When people asked me what I was going to be when I grew up, my answer was always “a dentist”. Well, except my teenage years, when I wanted to be a philosopher.
I can’t say it was easy becoming a dentist though. I studied in three different languages, Macedonian (Bitola – my hometown), French (Paris), and English (Toronto) and three vastly different cultures. Although I have always had the moral support from my parents, there was no one who could guide or help me with school or with the “business” after graduating.
Sheer perseverance, constant education, and a great deal of luck have brought me to a point in life that is better than any I could have dreamed of. I feel extremely fortunate to have such a great career as it has given me a great education about life (for the philosopher still in me) and has allowed me to see much of the world and meet some amazing people. I am extremely blessed with a wonderful wife and 3 amazing children.
My daughter joined the practice in 2015 and has revitalized the practice and allowed me to take more time to focus on health, more extensive treatment and even greater time to mentor our team.
Of course, without my great staff and my wonderful family of patients who have also supported my journey, (many of them for decades!), I would never have gotten to where I am today.
Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a dentist. At the age of 3 I would beg my dad to let me go to work with him, when he would let me, I would spend the day without complaining. As I grew up, I never wavered with what I wanted to do. I completed 3 years of an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Western Ontario when I was offered early acceptance into dental school at the University of Toronto. This was a dream come true for me. Years of dreaming and working towards becoming a dentist and to top it off, I was accepted into the same school my father went to!
During my time in dental school, I was selected as one of 5 students to work in the summer Emergency Clinic. I was also selected for a rotation to provide dental care to the First Nations community in Moose Factory, Ontario. I was involved with the student council and was elected Vice President of the Dental Student Society in my final year. In 2015, I graduated from Dental School with Honours and received the Cressy Award for Student Leadership.
Since graduating, I have been working alongside my father at ScarboroSmiles where he has been an amazing mentor. I teach future dentists part time as a Clinical Instructor in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Toronto. I also have a passion for continued learning.
I find dentistry extremely rewarding, there is nothing better than the feeling of helping patients. I especially enjoy working with children, cosmetic dentistry, and Invisalign because most of all I love giving people a reason to smile. Outside of work I spend my time reading, exercising, snowboarding, and traveling.
